What is the point of European Action?

European co-operation is still a useful and worthwhile ideal (anything better than another European war), but the EU has shown that it just isn't working. That is why we need to fix it, by making it democratic, transparent & effective. This is why European Action is an independent citizens' initiative to democratise Europe and put Europe first for a change! To find out more about EA, look here.

WHAT IS EUROPEAN ACTION?

European Action is a voluntary citizens' initiative (that I've set up in June 2023) which is EU-critical and that aims to inform Europe’s policy makers about the important and sometimes controversial but always far-reaching matters that they are regularly called to vote on. By means of these open letters (which have even made it onto the floor of the European Parliament) we lobby for more democracy in Europe and to help European citizens who are otherwise not heard in Brussels and Strasbourg to voice their worries and concerns in the house of European democracy. It is European Action's mission to stick our noses where it's not wanted: in the political business of the MEPs and the European Commission. This because we suspect that MEPs are often badly informed about the questions they have to vote on and usually just vote according to the wishes of their party or the Commission, without ever asking any critical questions themselves. European Action is dedicated to informing Europe's elected representatives about the real impact of their decisions and about the alternative options that exist.

Because the EU is a mess. And somebody needs to fix it, but nobody in the EU seems interested to do so.

So we'll just have to do it ourselves then ...

You can find all of European Action's letters & initiatives below and co-sign the ones you agree with. Thank you for your help.

24th of June 2025: Open letter to the European Parliament against the continued financing of the apartheid State of Israel by the EU; or in other words:

Put an Embargo against Israel into place!

Subject: The continued funding by the EU of a long-term human rights violator, namely the State of Israel.

Dear member of the European Parliament,

Through this open letter, I would like to urge you to take action against the European Union’s current practice of funding foreign states that engage in warfare, human rights violations, violence and lawlessness against civilians. How is it possible that the EU continues to finance nations that violate the basic principles that Europe s supposed to defend? In this letter, I would like to point out a major recipient of EU financing that is known to also be a long-term human rights violator: The State of Israel.

WHAT CAN WE DO?

In short, I argue for the following steps to be taken:

  • Europe first-principle: Limit EU funding to persons & institutions from EU countries only;

  • Block Israel’s access to EU funding; specifically European funding programs such as Horizon Europe;

  • Annul (or at least freeze)the current treaty of association between the EU and the State of Israel;

  • Impose a total European trade embargo on Israel. The EU currently accounts for +/- 30% of Israel’s exports, so by cutting off their exports, we can use economic pressure to create peace. At the same time, the IDF depends on imports from Europe to maintain their technology. By placing a technology embargo on the state of Israel, the IDF’s ability to mount operations will be reduced.

  • Demand that the Gaza Strip will be opened for humanitarian aid and international inspectors.

  • Propose an EU peacekeeping force to be stationed in Gaza Strip.

  • Demand the end of the destruction of northern Gaza, thus allowing Palestinians to return to the ruins of the ruins of their homes.

  • Condemn the escalation of the war in the Middle-East by Israel, the US and Iran, instead of just focusing on Iran: Iran, Israel and the US are all rogue states that have shown contempt for justice and international law.

  • Demand for the resignation of Ursula von der Leyen, who is a weak leader who has supported the apartheid State of Israel from the very start and still continues to support Israel.

Until then, all ties between Israel and Europe should be cut and Israel should be put under a total European embargo, similar to the one that was applied to apartheid South Africa as a consequence of its crimes against humanity. Why have different standards for different states?

At the same time, Mrs Von der Leyen should be held responsible for her continued and unquestioning support for the apartheid State of Israel. Clearly, Ursula von der Leyen does not represent the will of the Europe. Her unquestioning support of a foreign rogue state that stands accused of war crimes demonstrates an astonishing lack of good judgment. Simply put: Ursula von der Leyen has demonstrated that she is unable to adequately lead the Union, and therefore should not.

THIS IS NOT A QUESTION OF PICKING SIDES

Let us be frank here: This is not a question of having to pick sides between Israel or Hamas. The point is this:

We have to stand up to a rogue state that is bombing hospitals, power plants and people’s homes. We have to say that it is wrong that a 21stcentury western army is killing little children in their beds, because they speak a different language, have a different faith and because some (but not all) of their parents have committed acts of violent resistance.

We have to say that it is unacceptable that the EU keeps funding a nation that uses our tax euros to bulldoze peoples homes and steal land. This is about holding the state of Israel and its leaders accountable for the massacres they have committed, and about the ultimate question: Have Europeans really learned from their own history?

IN DEPTH: ISRAEL

My earlier letter of the 9thof October 2023was about the inappropriate display of the Israeli flag on the building of the EU Commission and the European Parliament, where the Israel flag was immediately raised. This happened even though Israel is nota member-state of the EU, which means that it is a flag that has no right to be raised at an EU building.

It is objectionable to raise the flag of a foreign state which is nota member of the EU, as flags raised at EU buildings should be those of either EU member-states or of the EU itself. Raising the flag of a foreign country that is not a member of the EU is simply inappropriate.

TO MAKE THINGS WORSE

Israel is a nation which has been embroiled in a brutal armed conflict for over the past 7 decades. Let us be frank: Israel is a country that has invaded territories inhabited by its neighbous, placed them under its military occupation and then ethnically cleanses and colonized them, which it then justifies on the basis of pieces of religious dogma.

This is a nation whose political leaders have made public statements calling for the extermination of an occupied population(the comment “remember what Amalek did to you” as uttered by Israel’s prime-minister Benjamin Netanyahu (who is currently wanted by the International Criminal Court on charges of war crimes1)is a particularly viscous example of a call to literally kill all of Israel’s enemies, even women and children.

Let’s face the facts: The 21stcentury State of Israel has moved beyond its original aim of being a national home for a persecuted people, but has instead become a rogue state: A state that is as bad as Iran or North Korea in its complete disregard for human life or international law. Israel is a state that stands accused of gross human rights violations and which is currentlysuspected2by an official UN tribunal of committing acts of genocide on the civilian population of the Gaza Strip.

This is not a small matter.

THE BARE FACTS

These are the bare facts:

In their preliminary ruling in the case of the Republic of South Africa versus the State of Israel of 20243, after hearing arguments and evidence from both parties, the judges of the International Court of Justice in The Hague ruled that Palestinians have a plausible right to be protected from genocide, after which it issued provisional measures ordering Israel to take all necessary measures to prevent any acts contrary to the 1984 Genocide Convention4. This comes down to a reasonable suspicion that acts of genocide are currently being committed by Israel in the Gaza Strip. We have to ask ourselves the question: If a reasonable suspicion of genocide does not exist, then why would the court have felt it necessary to order Israel to implement the Genocide Convention in the first place? The Court subsequently ordered the State of Israel to implement preliminary measures to both safeguard the lives of the civilian population of the Gaza Strip, as well as to safeguard any material evidence of genocidal acts from being destroyed. However, the State of Israel has outright ignored these provisional measures ordered by a United Nations court.

We see that after the ruling of the ICJ, instead of protecting the Palestinian civil population against genocide, the IDF stepped up its campaign of bombing and destruction of homes, hospitals, civilian infrastructure such as water treatment plants and power plants, as well as densely populated urban areas in northern Gaza. As we have seen from the images that have come out of Gaza, which are images of massive destruction and human suffering.

Footnotes:

1 According to the charge sheet of the ICC: “Benjamin Netanyahu is allegedly responsible for the war crimes of starvation as a method of warfare and of intentionally directing an attack against the civilian population; and the crimes against humanity of murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts from at least 8 October 2023 until at least 20 May 2024.” https://www.icc-cpi.int/defendant/netanyahu

4 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Africa%27s_genocide_case_against_Israel

What we see here is the systematic and planned destruction of the city of Gaza, followed by the ethnic cleansing of Palestinian urban areas and colonization by Israel, not the IDF’s excuse that this wholesale destruction of the urban landscape is just “the unfortunate consequences of war” between Israel and Hamas.

As a nation that considers itself as a Western nation that is aligned with the European Union and that claims to“share our European values”, Israel has both a moral and legal duty to protect the lives of the civilian population living within its borders, whether in the occupied territories or in Israel itself. Clearly, it does not do this in practical reality.

HUNGER AS A WEAPON

In fact, we see that the State of Israel is currently using food (or more precisely: hunger) as a weapon against the complete civil population of Gaza, having banned international aid from entering the area1 and forcing the inhabitants of Gaza to travel to only four (4)food distribution points in the south of the territory (reduced from 400 UN food distribution points)2, which are supposed to serve 2 million inhabitants. It needs to be mentioned that these food distribution points are controlled by the Israeli-American “Gaza Humanitarian Foundation”, which is an organization run through private military contractors (or as we would call them: mercenaries)and which are located in what the IDF itself describes as “an active combat zone”.

Using famine as a weapon of war against civilians qualifies as a war crime. In fact, the Gaza strip is currently being blockaded by the IDF, turning Gaza into the world’s largest open-air concentration camp.

Moreover, we have already seen attempts at civilian colonization of the Gaza Strip by Israeli colonists, where Israeli colonists arrived, attacked the local population and subsequently build illegal settlements, similar to those found on the occupied West Bank. It is meaningful that there are already organizations active in Israel that have started dividing and selling property in the Gaza strip to Israeli settlers, like Nachala. In this, Israel shows its real intention: To ethnically cleanse and colonize. Are these really the “values” that Europe shares with Israel?

THE FAILURE OF EUROPE’S LEADERSHIP IN THE MIDDLE-EAST

Despite this ruling, the EU’s leadership (to be specific, both Mrs. Von der Leyen as head of the Commission, Mrs Metsola as president of the European Parliament and Charles Michel as president of the Council) have openly and unquestioningly supported the state of Israel, without ever asking any hard questions about Israel’s use of unlimited military force against a densely populated urban area, or its frankly appalling track record of human rights violations in the occupied Palestinian areas over the past 70 years.

In fact, it was ONLY last week that Mrs Von der Leyen announced that she “had had a call with prime-minister Netanyahu, in which she demanded that aid would be let through to Gaza, and that Netanyahu promised her that Israel would do better”, but also added that “Israel has a right to defend itself” – which is a weak statement that illustrates Mrs Von der Leyen’s unwillingness to end her 100% support of the rogue state Israel. For which she has been heavily criticized .

Let’s be clear about this: We are not required to pick a side between Israel or Hamas. No! This kind of black and white thinking is the fallacy that drives this pointless conflict. After all, Hamas is an armed organization (whether you consider them to be “terrorists” or “freedom fighters” is not the point here) that has committed violent crimes, nobody denies this. But the actions of a private paramilitary organization cannot be used as an excuse for the collective punishment and ethnic cleansing of a whole civilian population at the hands of a 21th century Western army.

EU INVESTIGATION INTO GAZA

As you know, Dutch minister of foreign affairs Veldkamp has recently proposed that the EU should investigate the situation in Gaza, which is a proposal that has seen wide support from many EU member-states, and which seems to now be on the agenda, despite the fact that the EU Commission itself seems to be against it. An EU investigation into the situation in Gaza is a good start, but it is not nearly enough! After all: An UN tribunal has already concluded that there is a humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, that Palestinians have a plausible right to be protected, and that the State of Israel is not doing enough to protect human life in the Gaza strip, so what is there to investigate, really?

Beyond that, there is also the question: What consequences will there be if Israel decides to simply not allow EU investigators into the Gaza strip? Will EU funding for Israel be frozen if Netanyahu decides to ban European observers from entering the territory to see for themselves? With Mrs Von der Leyen at the helm of the EU, any serious consequences for Israel seem unlikely.

EUROPE’S DOUBLE STANDARD

At the same time, however, the EU’s treaty of association with the State of Israel has made Israel a de-facto part of the EU in all but name. In fact, this treaty of association speaks of ever closer ties and integration of Israel and Europe, due to our so-called “shared history and beliefs”. We have seen this far-reaching integration in such public events as the Eurovision Song Festival, where Israel has participated even though it is physically located in western Asia, and even though more and more Europeans seem to be increasingly unhappy with Israel’s continued participation in what is supposed to be a 100% European party. In a more hidden, but much more meaningful way,we can also see this integration in European subsidies, as Israel is a major beneficiary (but not a contributor!) of EU financing such as the Horizon Europe funding program.

HAVE EUROPEANS LEARNED FROM THEIR OWN BLOODY HISTORY?

Let us be frank here: This is not a question of having to pick sides between Israel or Hamas. This is a question of standing up to a rogue state that is bombing hospitals, power plants and people’s homes. This is a question of saying that it is wrong that a 21stcentury western army is killing little children in their beds, simply because they speak a different language, have a different faith and because some (but not all!) of their parents have committed acts of violent resistance. This is a question of saying that it is unacceptable that the EU keeps funding a nation that uses our tax euros to bulldoze peoples homes and steal peoples land. This is about holding the state of Israel and its leaders accountable for the massacre they have committed, and about the ultimate question: Have Europeans really learned from their own history?

I look forward to you response.
